Has anyone tried Green Grass by NutriVet? It's supposed to help neutralize a dog's urine so it doesn't burn the grass and turn it yellow. Is it harmful to the dog? Have you had any side effects?

Here's their website:

I appreciate your concern, but we give our dogs a lot of things that aren't natural that are actually good for them. For example, per my vet's recommendation,I give my dogs fish oil and Omega-3 supplements to help their diet. Most dogs don't get fish or fish oil in the wild but it is good for them.

Yes, I've been using it for a year. I have a female lab who used to kill the grass...ever since I've started giving her the Green Grass the grass really does stay green - no more dead spots from her urine. I checked with my vet and he said it was perfectly safe to give to my dog. She hasn't had any side effects and actually loves the tablets - she thinks they are treats that I give her after she eats. You can get it at Petco. Good luck!

I have not tried it, although I am suspicious of it, since what causes the spots is the high nitrogen content of the urine (it has nothing do do with acid). The nitrogen burns the grass, although if you dilute it with a watering can right after, there seems to be no issue and the diluted nitrogen actually makes the grass green. This is what I do, but then you have to watch where they go for this to work, or if you just don't do it one time, there will be a brown spot where they went. Girl dogs seem to create the spots more than boy dogs. If you give this to your dog, keep in mind you have added something to your dog's internal chemistry in order to save your lawn. If you feel comfortable with a vet's opinion; then go for it. I would recommend using a watering can or get a lawn patch kit at a pet store. They have a green spray which covers it and allows the yard to heal in that spot, or they have a polymer based grass seed kit which apparently fixes the spots. At any rate, if you have a girl dog and a lawn and she goes on it, there is no permanent fix and you will just have to maintain it continually. It's more work, but I just think sometimes we forget that dogs are complex living things and I would rather not medicate them for something cosmetic like my yard.

Do some more research to see "How" it works. If it causes the dog to drink more and expel more water with the urine, it is working like a diuretic. I wouldn't give that to my kid unless he had a medical issue that warranted it.

We actually bought it today. Hopefully it will do the job it claims.Parts of my lawn are looking pretty bad, since we got a female puppy. It didn't happen when we just had the male dog.
I guess the female dogs urine is much stronger than a males.
