My brother has a different father but as far as my sis and I are concerened (and my bro) we are brother and sisters. Weve had lots of different crap over the years with our mum and her boyfriends but we are a united group of siblings, always supporting and loving each other, thats what counts

If you do not want to hear any technical stuff and are so sure that you are correct, then why bother asking the question.

Each person has 46 Chromosomes.
23 from Mom
23 from Dad

If two siblings have the same mom, they have 23 chromosomes from the same parent AKA half the chromosomes which equals a half sibling. It doesn't matter if it's a different dad or mom, they are still only half siblings since they share one parent don't share the other parent, dispite your belief.

You are brothers and sisters by your Mom - either full or half.
If you all had the same Dad, then you would be full brothers and sisters.

Whoever has the exact same Mom and Dad are full brothers and sisters.

If any are born from a different father, even though you have the same Mom, you can only be half brother or half sisters.
However, that doesn't mean you can't be close and brothers and sisters in the heart. Sometimes they are "closer" than brothers and sisters by blood or same parents.

Half applies whether it's having a different mom or a different dad--you each got half of your blood, genes, chromosomes, etc from the same person. True brothers and sisters would share about half of the same DNA, while brothers and sisters from one different parent would only have about one quarter of the same DNA.

But beyond science is how you were raised and how close you are. I have four half-siblings. I am very close to two of them, so I call them my brother and sister. I'm not close at all with the other two, so I call them my step-brother and step-sister.

So factually, half applies to any siblings that share only one parent. But it doesn't REALLY matter, does it? Whatever floats your boat....

If you share the same mom with your sibling, but not the same dad you are half brothers or half sisters. Likewise, if you share the same dad with your sibling, but not the same mom you are also half brothers or half sisters. The only way to be brothers or sisters is if you share the same biological mother and father.

I am an only child, but feel very close to the half sibling I lived with. So, it probably doesn't matter all that much if you have a mother and father in common.

Whether you share a different mom or dad you and your sibling would be considered half brothers or sisters. With that being said it does not mean that you have to acknowledge that fact or ever bring it up. We didn't and we never brought it up or talked about it. My oldest sister has a different dad but that never came into play. As a matter of fact she used the same last name, she called our dad, daddy and he did no more for us than he did for her. As a matter of fact when she got married she invited he biological but our dad was in the tux giving her away!!!! The half sister and brother stuff is just as you said, technical stuff.

I think that's sexist!
If you have a sibling whose mother or father is different from yours then that person is your half brother ot half sister. You are that persons half sibling because only a half of your genes are from the same gene pool.

It's up to you if you want to consider that sibling a sister/ brother or a half - sister/brother. I just think that if you decide to call a sibling you share only the same mother with, your brother or sister you should do the same for a sibling with whom you share only the same father.
After all the circumstances that lead to that person becoming your sibling isn't their fault so they shouldn't be treated any less because of it.

Heck! I wasn't lucky enough to have biological siblings but I am fortunate enough to have 2 brothers who are as good as blood.

Half-siblings have one parent in common. If you have the exact same mother and father, you are full siblings. If you have the same mother but a different father, you are half-siblings, ditto for same father but different mother. This doesn't mean you have to consider each other anything other than brother and sister. It just has to do with genetic connection. All the kids in the family, even stepchildren, can act as brothers and sisters. Adopted children have no genetic connections, but they consider themselves brothers and sisters to the other kids in the family.

Genetically children with the same parents are full brothers or sisters, children with a different mom or dad from the others are half-brothers or half-sisters. Now, that doesn't mean that half-sibs aren't emotionally just a close as full-sibs. Sometimes they are closer. My husband has a half-brother he is extremely close to and they love each other as much as any full brothers and sisters ever did.

You would still be "half" if you had different fathers. It takes two to make a baby and if one of those two are different for each then only half of them are the same parent to all.
