I'm a Christian, so I don't buy the whole accidental life idea. It doesn't have a point. It doesn't explain beauty, art, happiness, or the reasons why I get up and go to work everyday. I doesn't explain why we choose to follow these ideas about good and evil. If there is no afterlife or no point to this one, why follow laws, why have a conscience? The complexity of our bodies and our planet seem impossible if explained by an accident.

If you haven't figured out the point of love, beauty, good and evil, I feel sorry for you that your're missing out on life.

I read a comment from one of your responders and I found it very disturbing. The person said, "what is the use of beauty, art, happiness?" I remind that person that each is used to see the mysterious God who created these things and to understand how God-like we are when we create beauty, art, and share our happiness. The use of these things on a human level is just that, to remind us we are human and not animals.
I pray that that person will come to appreciate these things and find happiness instead of reveling in their cynacism.
May the Lord bless and keep you. May He let light of His face shine upon you.
God's and your beast of burden

You're not making any sense here. Why would you think that having a conscience depends on having an afterlife? What is it that you think that being a Christian has that explains something, or that gives life a point? What do you mean by "accident"?

I don't think that you've thought this through very well.

If you are right -- then we are not here by accident, but God is. So -- what is the point of God?

I reject your premise that life can have no meaning without a God. Why can't we worship Good rather than God?

If you are ONLY a Christian because of the afterlife (and it sounds like you are), you better start worrying about where you will be in that afterlife.

The first point is that religious believers suffer from a common mental illness. If we assume the universe was created, then it’s reasonable to assume there was a creator. That’s as far as science has progressed today, but just look how far religion has progressed.

Religion states (fact) there was a creator called God, that God still exists, God also created places called Heaven & Hell, God wrote an instruction book called the Bible, God will banish evil people to Hell, God will send good people who follow the Bible to heaven, that people referred to in the Bible (like Jesus) will return to Earth, and a whole raft of other statements of fact. That’s right, religious fact, not assumptions.

Now tell me truthfully, if science doesn’t even know yet whether the universe was created or not, but religious believers state: “not only was the universe created by God, here’s a whole lot more proof and facts to go with it, what do you think?

Either religious believers just have vivid imaginations or suffer from a common mental illness. I think commonsense and logic would suggest that religious believers are mentally handicapped.

The second point is that there may be no point other than compost. How do you know that God (for you believers) really cares about human beings?

Imagine this. You’ve just bought a new home which you furnish with all sorts of nice fittings and fixtures, then prepare the grounds and garden. You plant a wide range of trees, shrubs, flowers, plants and vegetables. You clip and prune as time goes on, spray the weeds, and generally keep your property in good shape.

Many years pass and your gardens are flourishing, not a weed to be seen anywhere. You head off on holiday, a weed pops up and bugs start to crawl all over it. Not to worry, when you return home you spray the gardens, killing all the bugs and weeds. Everything is back to normal.

Now consider the universe. After billions of years a little planet (weed) called Earth pops up and it’s crawling with bugs called humans. Do you really think the gardener (or creator) really cares about the bugs and weeds? Do you think the gardener cares if he destroys you? Do you think that the bugs (humans) on the weed (Earth) have any idea what’s going on in the rest of garden (universe)? What happens to all human beings is just the same as what happens to all bugs and weeds – universal compost.

Correct! There is no point, except to enjoy it because it's the only chance you'll get at existing. I choose to follow laws because I don't wanna screw up my one life, and spend it in jail. And beauty is different to every person.

In short, we have the same purpose as animals in the wild. What purpose do they serve? They don't have laws or a higher purpose!!!!?? Survival is key and I wouldn't say that we are here by accident. Evolution brought us to who we are today and survival has gotten us this far!

I think we're here to learn. Think about it, even crappy situations you learn something. We get wiser every day we're here. And you're right, nothing is an accident. We planned it out for ourselves before we got here. It's us working toward our soul's perfection for God.
