I smoked for 9 years and I gained and lost weight during that time. However, when I quit smoking I gained about 10 lbs because I was eating a lot more. I think it depends on the person's metabolism and genetics and such.
You should really try to quit smoking. 6 cigs per day isn't too bad, you could quit fairly easily. But if you don't, I'm not one to judge.

As for my knowledge goes, smoking does not cause increase in your weight.Infact, like other said,it does act as subsitiute to food to chain smokers and hence lose weight.
BUT,smoking 6 cigs a day for the past 20 yrs,u should know that....,nicotine hardens your vessels, mostly arteries and can cause a INCREASE in your blood pressure which affects every organ in your body.As mentioned earlier,it also reduces your lung inhalation capactity.
Id rather have a normal diet than smoke. Now,that your 40 yrs,its high time you slowly take the innitiative to quit.
Medical progresses will attain great heights but nothing drastic in the next 20-30 yrs,so its important you work on it.GOOD LUCK and i hope the information was helpful.By the way,iam a med-student.

No. If anything it should cause weight loss. Stopping may cause slight weight gain, but it is far better than the alternative:
"Although people think of smoking most often in connection with lung cancer, smoking is also associated with cancers of the mouth, throat, voice box (larynx), esophagus, pancreas, kidney, and bladder. Women who smoke increase their risk of cancer of the cervix. Quitting smoking, however, significantly reduces the risk of cancer; 15 years after quitting, a former smoker's risk is almost as low as that of someone who has never smoked.

Usually you won't gain weight because it suppresses your appetite. Plus you already got your oral fixation.
BUT...it ruins your body, you stink (don't care how much you deodorize), you look trashy.....(no offense....but it's true)
Now, if you ever decide you were incredibly ignorant for starting and try to quit....then you'll probably start gaining weight. DONOT let this weight stop you from quitting! You can lose it easily with a sensible diet and exercise plan. This will start you feelin like you were 20 again. Trust me!!!!!!!!!!!!
