You can normally sue for more than policy limits. Doesn't mean you'll get it, but you can name any amount you want. I believe there are some states that cap the amount for which you can sue, but it's not across the board in all states. The insurance company, however, will only pay a max of its policy limit. Most tractor trailers carry a high liability policy of around a million. You still have to prove your case and its value- no guarantee you'll get that.

Get an Attorney. See A doctor. As you should know as you driver an 18 Wheeler, most commercial policies have either a 750,000.00 or 1 Million in coverage. If you are that severly Injured, you should get an attorney as it will be easier as they will help get all of your bills together and negotiate on your behalf.

There is a "cap" on the amount you can collect in damages. It's stated clearly in the policy. It's known as the "policy limit".

Usually commercial policies have a one million dollar limit, but these days it may be more. Large companies may also have an umbrella policy in case the primary coverage policy is exceeded.

There is no cap on defense costs, but it doesn't sound like you're defending a lawsuit, you're pressing one.
