It literally means "off the cart"...They push a little cart by your table, and you pick what you want...and each individual portion costs extra.

A la Carte refers to by it selfs. This is becomming very poppular for restaurants so you have your meal and the you order a salad or soup = extra charge order a side dish = extra charge.

So you see A la Carte really mean pay me more!

i think the wording of it technically means on the side. examples...i ordered my package of wedding pictures, but i also bought some a la carte, which meant that i just got some individuals that werent included in the package...and like the old days in school, buying a la carte items at lunch; instead of the standard lunch on a tray, it would be like buying just a sandwhich or just an order of fries..

by itself. so lets say you at a french restraunt instead of getting the full meal and you only want one thing on the plate you would say i will have (food your wanting) a la carte.there you go .
