Depends if you want him to come home in one piece or not. Throw him the party. Kids at that age, with their newfound adulthood make really foolish mistakes. I'm sure they'll be drinking, someone has to drive and when it comes to boys...the one who can stand still the longest is usually behind the wheel. Save yourself the agony of something going wrong and invite his friends to your house. Set up tents in the backyard for sleeping quarters and spend the $200 on food, one of those campfire things you can burn in the city and some lawn chairs. It'll be fun and everyone will be safe.

When mine turned 18 he was in Iraq and after he came back he made more money than his momma. I wouldn't throw him a party, nor give him that much money. You have to work a long time to earn 200 dollars and kids need to see how much sweat that is....

How about have all his friends come over to your house then pay a cab to take them into town and then pay the cab when they get back. Take that money out of the 200 and then give them the balance. That way no one drinks and drives. I'm assuming kids still drink at a young age

I'm not 18 yet but I think a party is better of course or buy him a present. I don't support giving dollars as it make it less special. Don't tell him about your ideas, the surprise would be gone !

I'd give him the cash...

Throwing him a party though, would insure his safety for the night. (Who says you have to be like, right there during the party. No 18 year old wants their mom around for a party like that. No offense.)
