Whether or not having 8 cups of coffee (caffeine) is bad for you depends on whether how it affects you and whether you have other problems that make it inadvisable to consume it.

Caffeine is known to cause the "jitters" (shaking) if you have enough of it. Some people are sensitive enough to it that even an early morning cup of coffee can make them jittery in the afternoon and keep them wide awake when they go to bed.

Of course, caffeine has been used by college students forever to keep them alert when they need to study on little sleep. That's not a health problem as long as it's not done night after night for an indefinite period of time.

Loss of sleep can reduce your immune response and make you susceptible to infection.

People with stomach or esophagus problems such as ulcers or inflammation should probably avoid coffee -- even the decaffeinated variety can exacerbate the GI tract because of the acid it contains.

Caffeine can make your heart race, but if it's within normal limits (not exceeding 100 beats per minute unless you're exercising), then that's not a problem.

Caffeine does not seem to increase blood pressure except in people who already have high blood pressure.

Caffeine should probably not be used except in small amounts, when a woman is pregnant. Follow the doctor's advice in such cases.

If caffeine doesn't cause or exacerbate any of the problems I've discussed, then there really isn't much of a case for being concerned about using it.

Researchers have long tried to pin something on caffeine -- high blood pressure and other signs of heart disease and a variety of cancers. Those endeavors have not been successful. So if you like your daily frappacino, then go for it!

** I do personally believe It's not just the amount of coffee or soda you drink each day, but how your body manages caffeine.
I do believe that its always best to eat and drink things in moderation, but that is just my personal opinion **

Just an FYI: Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and can produce a variety of effects elsewhere in the body.

The symptoms of a caffeine overdose ("caffeinism") will vary, according to individual differences and the amount consumed.

Doses ranging from 250 to 750 mg (2 to 7 cups of coffee) can produce restlessness, nausea, headache, tense muscles, sleep disturbances, and irregular heart beats.

Doses of over 750 mg (7 cups of coffee) can produce a reaction similar to an anxiety attack, including delirium, ringing ears, and light flashes.

These amounts of caffeine may come from a single dose or from multiple doses at short intervals.

Besides caffeine's effects, the essential oils of coffee may cause gastrointestinal irritation and diarrhea, and the high tannin content of tea can result in constipation.

As long as you are using semi-skimmed milk that should be OK. But the sugar is another story. Let me show you how 7-8 spoons of sugar can add up. In one level teaspoon, 16 calories and 4 grams of carbohydrate. One rounded is 1 1/2 tsp and 24 calories with 6 grams of carbohydrate. Depending on how much sugar a spoonful is to you, you are averaging between 120 - 180 calories/day just in sugar alone. Depending on how much milk you add to your coffee, it can add between 80 - 120 calories/day to your diet. This is a total average of 200 - 300 calories/day to your diet, which may be quite a bit of extra calories. Try using skim milk with an artificial sweetener such as Splenda. I promise, you won't notice much of a difference, and you'll be adding alot less calories to your daily intake. It might be good to use decaf sometimes too because that much regular coffee will increase your heart rate and can cause heart palpitations and the jitters in some people. Keep an eye on your blood pressure!

Yes a person can drink too much coffee and 8-10 cups is too much.
If you can't or don't want to cut down, make half caffeinated and half decaf. That will help reduce your caffeine intake which is really the bad culprit in coffee.
That's what I did.

I ended up in the hospital with caffeine poisoning twenty eight years ago. Had to quit cold turkey and went through a fairly rough withdrawal (headaches & pain). Couldn't drink coffee for twenty years and now limit myself to one small pot (2 large cups) a day. I was drinking up to 35 cups a day and never had any after 5:00pm.

Lol, yeah I guess there could be some bad side effects from too much coffee. Maybe some yellow/orange teeth, shakiness from all the caffeine, or other little problems. But other than that I'd say drink on!
