There are lots of causes. The commonest one is mononucleosis, affectionately known as "the kissing disease"...

Monocytes are one of several types of white blood cells; segemented neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, basophils and eosinophils are the main ones that get counted.

On the whole, think mono. Rarely, leukemia will be from a monocytic clone, but that would usually also show a major elevation in the white count.

The Mononucleosis is so-named because the count of mononuclear leukocytes (white blood cells with a one-lobed nucleus) rises significantly. There are two main types of mononuclear leukocytes: monocytes and lymphocytes. They normally account for about 35% of all white blood cells. With Mono, it can become 50-70% Also, the total white blood count increases 10000-20000 per cubic millimeter.
Please see the webpages for more details on Monocyte and Mononucleosis.

Although it could be many things, a high monocyte count will usually indicate an infection somewhere - but it's impossible to diagose without seeing the other results - was everything else normal? If the dr didn't seem worried, i wouldn't worry. Hang in there!
