In Minnesota attempting suicide is illegal. Committing the act of suicide is not illegal. I suppose because there is no way to enforce a penalty. Even though attempting suicide is illegal, never had I seen a person charged with it. They are brought to a mental health professional for an evaluation. If they go against their will they are held against their will for minimum of 72 hours. If the voluntarily go they are evaluated and often times are released soon after wards. Kind of sad to think people are so lost in the world that they see nothing getting better and choose to give up.

I don't know about being illegal. But I do know that a lot of life insurance companies will not pay benefits to survivors if the insured committed suicide. Also, it is a sin and the person who does it won't get into heaven.

Both attempted suicide and assisted suicide are generally illegal in most states.

While suicide itself may be technically illegal, what punishment could they possibly apply that would act as a deterrent? Life?

{EDIT to Ashley3} Murder is usually defined by statute as a form of homicide, which is the killing of someone else. Doesn't apply to suicide.

Why do you ask? If you are thinking about trying
suicide yourself, I'd advise against it. Some people
who go for it, don't die, but continue to live a life as
a parapalegic, mentally retarded, unable to walk,
bedfast in a nursing home.......surely you wouldn't
want to finish out your life in that manner.....and it
defiitely could happen if the attempt is not successful.
Fine some friends in a good church and start living
the good and successful rest of your life. God can
turn your unhappy life around and then you could do
so much good from now until death (not suicide) takes
you.

There is no law against suicide. However to allow someone to commit suicide is not legal. When someone tries to commit suicide then it is the law that every attempt must be made to keep this from happening. There is a law that says that if someone tries to kill themselves then law enforcement can stop that person from hurting themselves using whatever means necessary...including incarcerating the person who tries to kill themselves. (By using a mental health warrant.)
It is sometimes a little hard to understand these (mental health laws) but they really are to protect those who would otherwise harm themselves.
If there is someone you know that is thinking of this then it is your duty to help them. If you need help then please ask someone to help you. I will help you if you need it...
Good luck...

Over in a town in France, their cemetery is getting full, so they made it an official law that suicide is illegal in the town.

What's anyone going to do??? You'd be dead. It's illegal to help someone commit suicide, though.

I don't know if it is illegal but i do believeGod wants us to depend on Him only. What about the people we leave behind and how they must be hurting over what we did. We need to stop being so selfish.
