We got her today, and every so often she starts sounding like she has a hairball. She hasnt thrown up yet, but do you think she's ok?

Since this is a brand new puppy, I'm thinking kennel cough. It's easy to get rid of especially with meds - but I'd see the vet to be sure.

She probably has one of two problems that sound similar.

The more serious condition is called collapsing trachea. She could be coughing to open up the trachea. If you put slight pressure on her throat, does she cough?

The much less serious condition is commonly called a "reverse sneeze". It has to do with a malformed soft palate (nothing serious though). It allows the dog to inhale through both the mouth and nose at the same time. This lasts a very short time. Some methods to stop this include opening the dog's mouth or closing off the nostrils for a few seconds until the dog inhales through the mouth (I recommend the first over the second). Or if you calm the dog down, it should stop on it's own. Around here we just call it "snorking".

You can have a vet to look at her because the first condition is very serious and can be life threatening. Make sure you go to a vet that is used to dealing with small dogs as some vets don't know about the reverse sneezing .

I am so upset have had my puppy for 3 weeks now. She has coughed and choked the entire time. I took her to the vet he gave her an antibiotic which didn't work. She still continues to cough and choke throughout the day - and yes if i touch the front of her neck she will react with a cough. :( I really can't afford an operation - I don't know what to do :(

Hey there...we have a new puppy too, and just like a new baby, we worry about EVERY LITTLE ABNORMALITY...
I have had dogs before that HAVE had hairballs... if it is a hairball and just can't seem to cough it up, I used to let my dog have a teeny spoonful of margerine, and/or you can buy hairball remedies at your local pet store that are often flavored....you could try that.
BUT, also in my experience, until you know it can tolerate that margerine or butter, beware that it also could loosen the next stool...
hope it works out for you (no pun intended)

It's possible your little bit might have what is called a "collapsed trachea". I've been told it's fairly common in the smaller breeds (my little Chihuahua 'Griffin' suffers from it). You might want to check with your vet; there's not much that can be done. It sounds terrible and it's probably scary for our animals -- but love and care can go a long way! It always seems more to happen whenever Griffin is overly excited. I hope this helps!

It is most likely a kennel cough that should clear within a few days.
this happens a lot with dogs kept with many other dogs.
It happens to dogs of all sizes.
Chances are she'll eat grass and throw up saliva and mucus like liquid.
If the coughing persists for more than a week or so, you may need a check up.
You can call your vet to see what household medications and dosage can be used to soothe this. ( I know there is one but i dont not remember what it is called.)

Sounds like kennel cough to me. Some other symptoms to look for are if she's worse at night, and if she throws up a white, frothy substance. If it is kennel cough she will clear up in about 2 weeks on her own, but you can take her to the vet to get some sedatives so she can get some rest. I hope this helps!

Do dogs get hairballs? Might she have a respiratory infection? Do you think she may have something loged somewhere? Maybe you should have a vet look at her.

needs to go to the vet... could be lots of things from respiratory infection to choking.

think of it this way: if your infant was doing this, would you go to the doctor?

in any case, it is not a normal behavior... and NO dogs do not get hairballs!

Take her tomorrow to the vet for a health check and see what is up. Hopefully you got a health guarantee with her so if something is wrong she can be returned.
