many dogs, including the breed I raise, will not bark at people until they are 2 years old..Until then, they are reliant on you to protect them..after they mature, it turns around, so that they feel protective of you and your property..You rarely need to teach barking.

Golden Retrievers are not the ideal watch dog, they are very people friendly dogs, and if you are looking for a watch dog, you might look in to a working dog breed group, German Shepherd, Rotteweiler, Akita, etc. You can find that info on akc.org which have links to breeders, and stuff. Know that even though Goldens do not make good watch dogs, that doesn't mean your Golden will not protect you, dogs a have a gift of picking up on your emotions, fears and feelings, and if they feel you are being threatened or going to be harmed many dogs, from the tiny poodle to the irsh wolf hound would put their life on the line to ensure your safety. The best way to ensure that is to establish a strong, healthy and happy bond with your Golden, and once they trust you, you can trust them.

Goldens will frequently get excited and bark even as they'll meet new human beings. they'll in ordinary words bark in the journey that they understand this is going to ensue. If she would not associate the sound of the doorbell with assembly new human beings, or human beings strolling through with assembly new human beings, she may not bark. attempt socializing her. Goldens do make large watch dogs, yet terrible preserve dogs. I heard someone say once "Goldens make large watch dogs because they bark at anybody. They make terrible preserve dogs because they purely favor to play. that they'd probably purely teach the thief the position the best silverware is." ;) My Golden is 8 weeks and would not bark even as he meets new human beings.

Use a gentle restraint and use short intervals of training.
Restrain your pet, take something that your pet would like, convince them to bark for this.
Once she barks, tell her "speak!"
Do this two of three times and reward her.
This is the best, a few times a week or so, without making her unfriendly.

Not all breeds will bark at people. Some dogs just aren't vocal and don't make good watch dogs

a golden retriever is not supposed to be a guard dog. my dog is supposed to be. i have a boxer. she is the most protective dog ever. golden retrievers are scared of there own shadow. if you want a guard dog get a boxer. they look fierce, and are if someone is threatening you, but they are really nice to children and people who are nice to it.
