I went to a petshop recently. I was asking the owner if the dogs are of pedigree quality. He said yes, but refused to give the buyer the certificate unless he is going to bring the dog for show. Are pedigree dogs of show quality?

If a dog is registerable with the AKC, it has a pedigree. It does not necessarily mean it is show quality.

Actually, all dogs have a pedigree, but with a registered dog, you can get a pedigree that lists for 3, 4 or 5 generations all the dogs in the your puppies ancestory.

Don't buy from a pet shop. Those puppies primarily come from puppy mills which is not where you want a puppy. Buy from a reputable breeder or save a life and adopt a puppy from a shelter.

Just as the others said, never buy a puppy from a pet shop. They are puppy mill dogs, mostly sick and not of any show quality at all.

A pedigree just lists the the lineage of the dog back at least 3 generations. Having a pedigree does not mean the dog is a quality dog or not. You can get a pedigree of any registered dog. If there are lots of champions in the bloodline, that shows that he is from champion stock but still does not guarantee that he will be show quality.

Pedigreed dogs are not necessarily show quality - the majority are pets. A pedigree is simply a purebred dog's family tree, parents, grand parents, great grand parents. There's no such thing as a dog being pedigree quality. If it's purebred, it has a pedigree. Never, ever buy a dog from a pet shop, these dogs come from puppy mills. Think about it - would any reputable, responsible breeder sell his puppies (which he's invested a lot of time and money in) to a pet shop where they can't approve the homes the puppies go to?

Pedigree simply means the dog's ancestry has been recorded and have a registry. If the dog truly is a pedigree there should be a registry of the bloodline.

I don't believe a purebred has to be a pedigree to enter the show ring. As long as the dog is a purebred that mets the breed standards and has completed and won a succession of titles, it could be a show dog. A few years back the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show had a purebred dog that was found in a shelter, so I'm wondering if the dog was stray how did they know the dog's pedigree?

First, PLEASE don't buy a dog from a pet shop.
You are asking for trouble.
EVERY AKC registered dog has a pedigree,
but that doesn't mean it's a quality animal.
It merely means that AKC knows who the dog's
ancestors are for 3 generations.
No doubt, the pet shop owner did not have the pedigree to give the buyer, but he should have had an AKC litter paper. The remark about
show quality doesn't make much sense.
There are no show quality dogs being sold in pet shop

Pedigree dogs are dogs that are purebloods. They are one type of breed, no mixes. Pedigrees also have a paper trail proving their lineage and history. Some pedigrees are of show quality and others are not. It just depends. Not to offend you, but I highly doubt the petshop can prove that the dog they have is a pedigree. Their dogs often come from puppy mills and they have no idea of their blood line.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tinyurl.im/6ZWyS

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

"Pedigee" ONLY means a "family tree" is written down!
YOU have a pedigree if you know your mother & father! MUTTS/MONGREL have "pedigrees" if *their* parents are known!!

PUREBRED/REGISTERED dogs have pedigrees that can be traced back 20,30,*50* generations!
Maybe 15-20% of any PUREBRED/REGISTERED dogs-ALL/ANY breed- are of show/breeding QUALITY!! The rest are PET QUALITY & removed from the breeding program.

No pet store sell shoq quality puppies. If the dog is AKC registered, you can get the pedigree right from AKC. But if you buy from a pet store, you are getting a puppy mill bred puppy, and they can fudge the records easily, so it can mean nothing at all anyway!!!!

Go to a real breeder!!!!

"Pedigree" means "we claim to know who the parents are" (and unless they are DNA-typed, you can't really know for sure who the parents are).

That's it.

They could be the worst example of the breed, but if you know who the parents are, you can get their "pedigree".

Don't let "papers" fool you. Know what they mean (and what the registries are - all registries are NOT created equal!!!!!) before you get all impressed by them.

IMHO, unless you are showing dogs, all that pedigree papers are good for are housetraining.
