Where are you getting that? The Beatles (if that's who you mean) had a sound that no one heard of until them. Others followed. Oh sure, Elvis was rockin....but it was a rock/blues....honky tonk sound at that time. A few others but again, none like the Beatles.

Beetles are great. The reason they base themselves on rocks is so that if they see you coming they can hide under the rocks. Otherwise, if they stayed away from rocks you might squish them, if you were that kind of person--not to imply that you are--but how could they tell either way (after all, they're just beetles) The reason they choose American rocks is because American rocks are harder than and have more resolve than those pansy European rocks. Hope I was able to clear things up.

Because American artists were their formative influences, they got records merchant marines and others from the foreign ships that landed in Liverpool.

Alot of the music they listened to was called ' race' music in those days and not necessarily listened to by american young people. It was still segregated in those days , socially, so the Beatles re-introduced american artists back to teenagers around the world.

They were so great because there was absolutely nothing like them in music at that time.

They wrote their own music, when normally popular music was penned by songwriters from tin pan alley and elsewhere, so they introduced a whole new genre.

They were at the time just what young people needed in the stark days after the JFK assassination. Do you know that the first night they appeared on Ed Sullivan , there was not one crime committed by young people in NYC. We in North America were all glued to our tv sets and the next day the world had changed forever.

The Beatles were responsible for concept lps like Seargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and the White Album, they created album cover art. They influenced fashion, language, movies, tv, everything and NO-ONE since has ever had such a universal appeal and affect.

Rock started with the blues, which was based in America. However, the Beatles took something that was at its most basic and created an entire new sound. They dared to be different and changed an entire cuture. That is why they are so great.

First learn to spell BEATLES!

Secondly, every musician bases his music on
something he likes.

The BEATLES liked rock and roll and the blues
and Rock-a-billy music.

They based their songs on what their audience liked, so they could sell records.

It seems to me that they did a very good job,
didn't they.

Just like Eric Clapton. He started with CREAM,
did some Rock and Roll, then Ballads and now he does strictly the Blues, nothing else.

People change!

This is actually a good question. The first song that comes to mind is 'Yesterday'. That certainly wasn't written by the Beatles.

Because they wanted to appeal, most of all, to America, where the big dollars were (and still are). Besides, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. There's nothing new under the sun.

Still, you can't deny they put a revolutionary energy into these songs, along with their own works, and that they revolutionized the music industry. A whole generation was changed forever.

Their influcences were based on many different styles. They loved rock and roll. What rock and roll wasn't based on something else such as blues, boggie woogie etc.? They just worked very hard at their job which was making really tight music. I think it was their love of music that made them great just like many other bands.

Everyone was influenced by someone... the Stones were also influenced by Elvis and Elvis was influenced by Gospel and "black" music.

The Beatles were great because they took their influence and used it to come up with new sounds, continuously growing and learning their craft. They also used drugs to influence their song-writing.

There were many other great bands at the time, all using each other as influences. When the Beach Boys heard "Rubber Soul," it challenged Brian Wilson to step up his skills when preparing "Pet Sounds."

everyone has their influences. you can't create something out of nothing. They may have taken some inspiration from a few American bands, but think of how many bands took their inspiration from the Beatles. That's why they're truly great, it's nothing to do with statistcs or who they apparently 'copied'. Influence is everything.
