You said honest, here goes. When I was chasing women back in the 80's, I was very blunt with them. I said "Come with me, we're going" and they would either follow or tell me to get lost. But other times, I would say "Oh, so you have a boyfriend, not anymore, lets go." Again, some would and some didn't.
Now I am direct but not crass. I'll say "We should do this together", or "go do that", "see this". "When can you go?" If she can't then I let it go. No biggie, I say.
The funniest one I heard was in a movie called "Back To School" with Rodney Dangerfield. (I don't recall the exact days he used)
What are you doing tonight?
Oh, I got class.
What are you doing Tuesday?
I got class again.
Well, why don't you give me a call when you got no class.

Um....so, what are you doing tonight? She says, nothing... so you say, wanna hang out? she says, ok (hopefully). She says, where you wanna go? You say, it doesn't matter, beautiful, cause i'd be happy anywhere holding your hand. (sappy, yes, but she will feel very good about herself after that, and more importantly, good about you.) She laughs, blushes, you say, I'm not joking! I really like you, and i want to spend more time with you. is that alright? then she says, i guess...(again, hopefully) so, you are practically going out. then after a while, just ask her is she wants to be your g/f. and if things are working out she'll say yah.
It's better than just asking on a dime.

I jsut smile and twist my hair around my fingers until they smile back, then I just reel them in...lol. Seriously, I did that, but I have also said things like, "I really want to be closer to you than they will allow here" That one works pretty well too. Best wishes
