Just taking an African Grey to a vet does not mean that your bird will receive the proper wing clip. I've seen several greys receive bad wing clips at the hands of "an expert" vet or parrot groomer. You need a certified avian vet to show you the proper way to clip a grey.

You can clip the wings yourself with a helper who is knowledgeable in restraining greys. A too tight of a hold can result can prevent your bird from breathing. Since greys are heavy bodied birds, you need to be careful not to do too radical of a clip that causes the bird to crash to the floor and injure its keel and chest area. Be careful not to clip any blood feathers. You can easily distinguish blood feathers from their appearance.

With the help of my daughter, we clip all of our bird's wings ourselves and that includes two Congo African Greys.

This website has excellent pictures detailing the correct way to clip a birds feathers.

Remember.....just clipping the wings of any bird does not ground them completely. A good gust of wind and off they go into the wild blue yonder! Many of bird has been lost because the owner believed them to be grounded.

If you have never done this before, you should have someone that knows what they are doing teach you the proper method. Bird breeders and/or your veterinarian are the best choices for learning. Once you learn how to do it properly, the task is simple. My grey allows me to clip his wings and he thinks nothing of it. You definitely need to have a pair of sharp and sturdy scissors. You may need to cover your bird with a towel if he wants to fight the process.

Have whoever teaches you about the wings go over the care for nails and beaks too. Most people forget that the beak grows and needs some grooming care on occasion. Most people take their bird to the vet for beak care, but if you learn how to do it properly, doing it yourself is not difficult.

Another thing to watch with birds is their leg band. Some people forget about the band, but you need to make sure the leg does not outgrow the band. If this happens, the band can grow into the leg. As long as the band freely spins around the leg, the band is OK.

Good luck!

Get them clipped at your local vet. I have had birds for years and it would be difficult to explain the correct clipping method over the Internet. Just ask your vet to show you how its done. Do not attempt to do it on your own without prior experience, it is possible to cut a blood feather and that could be very bad if the bleeding is not stopped quickly because birds have very little blood. For future reference if you do eventually clip your birds wings on your own have a blood stopping powder handy, the vet can provide you with one. Also if you don't have any on hand corn starch can be a substitute. Good Luck.

I work for a vet and am also a pet groomer. You have to be very careful when clipping wings because if you cut the blood vessel the bird can bleed to deatth. My suggestion is to take your bird to the vet and have them clipped. It is not expensive and better to be safe than sorry. By the way I am looking for a grey. Any suggestions where I could rescue one? beckydansby@yahoo.com

The proper way - take the parrot to the vet. *Never* clip them yourself, unless you're a professional vet yourself. (Which I'm assuming you're not, as you're asking the question.) You can't guarantee a sterile environment, and you could seriously injure the bird if you don't know exactly what you're doing.
