You don't want to keep the poor dog cooped up anywhere for any great length of time. They have to "relieve" themselves, and need room to stretch. If you question is more for travel purposes, or while you are away at work, etc., I know dogs can stay in their "crates" for up to 8 hours while people work, so the pup does chew their way thru the house. Eventually after the pup gets a little older, past the chewing phase, they graduate out of the crate when they become independent.

Depends on the conditions the carrier is in. If it is hot, cold, plane, car.
Usually in good conditions it's okay for them to be in it for 2 to 3 hours before a little break, bathroom and water.

as long as he has room to stand up and lay down without being cramped, should be o.k. til he absolutely has to potty - my schnauzer can go 13+ hours w/o an accident on a good day - today is not one of those good days - and we don't make a habit of it, but that is the longest i've ever left him alone in the house. oh, and make sure he gets water regularly.

Ask your veterinarian- he's the specialist. How long would you like to be locked up in a crate?
Dogs need to exercise, drink water and relieve themselves.
