The file may be corrupt or you may be dealing with a codec. In either case, I would use a program like DivX Doctor to convert it into a readable movie. If all else fails, re-download the file and try again. If that doesn't work, I would say your file is corrupt with no way of reading it.

The simplest way I know of to convert video files with a .avi file extension is to use a software called ConvertXtoDVD. You can download and install the software for free but the free version adds a watermark to the DVD. If you want to remove the watermark then you need to purchase a license ($35 USD). try this go to http://avicodec.duby.info and download the avi codec then try again
