I'm not looking for your common Jose Cuervo or overrated Patron brand - but something that is good without the "flair" or hype. I've never been a tequila drinker - but only because I was probably exposed to the cheap stuff. So could someone please point me in the right direction to give this spirit another chance?

I live in Mexico and I am a professional tequila drinker. Half of the people who answered your question dont have a clue what they are talking about. Good tequila first of all should alqays be 100% blue agave, secondly original tequila is always white. The color comes from aging it in oak to make it reposado or anejo. The difference is in the flavor and it depends on your personal preference. I myself like white. Some good brands are, centenario plata, herradura antiguo, maestro tequilero, don julio, tres magueyes, porfidio, 7 leguas

Jose Cuervo is premium tequila, and Patron is ultra-premium.

If you want something without the hype go to your liquor store and find something that's a few dollars cheaper than Jose Cuervo, because that means it's just as good as Cuervo, but without all the advertising expenses.

Here is a sample of Tequilas in order of best taste, by The Beverage Tasting Institute. They're very reputable as far as reviewing spirits go, but keep an eye out for spirits that will be available at your local store. I thought my local liquor store was big, but they barely have a lot of selection past the normal stuff.

The blue agava tequila's are the best. I don't think Patron is overrated. It's very good. Also, Don Julio is great stuff. Very very smooth. Try the Anejo, it is aged and really excellent.
Silver is not aged at all
Reposado is aged just under 12 months
Anejo is aged 1 to 3 years
Extra Anejo is aged over 3 years.
The older the better and smoother. Enjoy!

Casa Noble is my choice of tequila, not too many people now about it but it is one the best, you should try it...

"Casa Noble ultra premium tequilas begin as carefully selected individual 10 year old plants of Blue Agave. Each one must meet the strict requirements for water and sugar content. We slow-cook them for 38 hours in stone ovens.

Then, using only the core and hearts of the agaves, we extract their robust juice. The fermentation process is 100% natural, followed by a triple distillation. The result is a tequila so pure and full of agave flavor that it has elevated the concept of tequila to new levels around the world.

Casa Noble Tequila Produced and Bottled in Mexico. 40% Alc/Vol (80 Proof). 100% Blue Agave."

If you're looking for something really good try Cabo Wabo Tequila - it's good enough to drink neat. If you're looking for something in the price range of Cuervo to mix or shoot I would suggest Sauza. It's smoother and not quite as harsh. But at the end of the day it's still Tequila.

Just make sure that the tequila is 100% agave and then it is real.. Jose is NOT in United States but is in Mexico. After this it is cost vs taste. Just experiment. I like lots of them. As you can see everybody has there favorites.

cuervo black is good, a bit smoother than the regular stuff. Just eat yor salt and lime and shut up. You'll end up on the floor in a pool of your own vomit whatever kind of tequila you choose.

Herradura Silver (with Cointreau) for margaritas. For sipping, either Don Julio Anejo or El Tesoro Anejo.
