A friend of mine works a dismantler, he said the early ones had bad transmissions, and the newer ones have bad engines, if you could combine the two, would make a good car.

From everything I've heard about Intrepids they are decent cars...Not a hot rod by any stretch, but decent cars that since they are a large "family car" are reasonable for a young person to insure.
The only "bad" things I've ever heard is that the newer models (before DC dropped them) had a tough blind spot on the driver's side because of the extra metal between the RR passenger window and the back window. The blind spot could of course be overcome by taking an extra second to look over the shoulder, or by installing a small "fish eye" mirror.
Good luck on the new wheels.
Take care
Mike

I have a 2003 Dodge Intrepid and I love the car. But the engine was made in 2002 and it's the 2.7 liter. There have been some issues with this engine including but not limited to seizing up. Mine failed at 47,000 and was replaced at a cost of $5700. The majority was paid by the warranty I purchased. If it has the 3.5 liter go ahead, but think long and hard if it has the 2.7 liter. It might last for 200,000 miles if you take care of it, but the last owner might have skimped on oil changes and these motors don't respond well to owner neglect.

First of all, do you plan to buy one or do you have one and want to know more about it? Second, what trim do you plan to buy or currently have? (ES, LS, so on and so forth). My mom recently procured a 2002 Dodge intrepid ES from a dealership about an hour away from our town, it has forged aluminum wheels, leather interior, and a new spoiler installed by my brother (who currently works at that specific dealership (hooray for employee discounts, woot) and it is in the color they call 'pewter'. We have had the car for about a year, it was like new when we bought it and still is, we have not had any work done, and my mom drives her cars hard, it stands up to a fair beating. It is a very reliable car, and pretty fun with a large engine, the largest being the 3.5 liter V6 (which we have). They have a fair amount of 'get-up-and-go' and are very reliable work cars. They sound very nice under acceleration, and do well on the highway. I have a '97 model that my grandparents used to own, it is in very good condition with a 3.3 liter V6 that moves the car pretty well for it's age, and it is very nice. All in all, the intrepids are very nice, and have been improved as the years go on, and it would be a very good choice to own one, as they also normally drive with about 18 to 26 mpg and don't cost much to maintain. Also, as one final note, if you want more power, many people have installed turbochargers on their intrepids.Good day and good luck to you. :)

There are many sites that do reliability ratings.
Personally the best I feel is consumer reports, but they don't make there's free. My recommendation is to go into your local public library and ask for the consumer reports year end rating book. They have excellent information on how the car rates in terms or reliability.
Some sites with free infomation on line can be found here:
http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/reliability.aspx?year=2002&make=Dodge&model=Intrepid
Go here and select your year, make and model
http://www.jdpower.com/autos/usedratings.asp
These sites will give you a better idea than any one person on this site.

I don't really care for Chrysler cars after 1972 and before 2004 ... but it's your dime. (You asked).
