Is it safe to use dented cans?
A: Products in slightly dented cans can be consumed as long as there are no leaks and the product appears wholesome. Do not consume products from severely dented, leaking, or swollen cans or jars.

Cans that are swollen / bulging are bad, but also avoid dented cans - not exactly sure why, but that's what I hear. Why risk and purchase a dented can, just get another one or don't buy it. I myself, am real particular and I believe that they say that for a reason.
Okay, I just read others responses and now it makes sense. One thing I should say that by cooking you can kill bacteria but NOT their toxins. So if something developed food poisoning, by heating it does not make it any safer, you will still get sick.

If a can is dented, the tin layer can be cracked, letting the liquid come in contact with the steel. Now you have two metals (steel and tin) in contact with a conducting solution (the liquid in the can). The can of food begins to produce electricity. It also starts to oxidize (rust) the metal in the can, producing a hole and letting the food inside spoil. That is why we don't buy dented cans.

The risk is that there is a tiny crack in the metal of the can, so the food inside may spoil. So, if you eat from a dented can, there may be some risk of food poisoning.

possibly. if the can's dented, it's possible that there's a teeny-tiny hole/crack and if that's the case, bacteria may have gotten in. more than likely, that's not the case though, and if you heat the food to 160 degrees for 10 minutes it'll kill it al anyway.
but then again, most processed food in a can is horrible for you anyway...and those few that are not, have no nutritional value, so does it really matter?

It's probably not the best thing to do. If the can is dented microorganisms can enter and make you very sick. If you can help it, eat from a non-dented can...

Maybe, but usually not. If they're bulging, or the food smells bad, toss it. But in most cases they're just dented and they're fine.

depends if the can is blown, taken air into the can, bacteria form producing gas which blows the lid or base or sides out , distorts.
the safe way is not to take the risk, food poisoning can kill. regards lf
