First of all, a rumor is a falsehood... you know it and your true friends know it as well. Perhaps the rumor started with misinformation or maybe you're not even the right person. Just let people know it's wrong about you... that someone must have confused you with someone else. Or maybe even the person who started the rumor is really the subject afterall!

It happens to everyone...it just sucks! I know a lady at work who is a habitual liar. She says one thing and then another. LOL...she gets mad because I call her on it.
Like when she says she went to college 5 years ago and is one unit away from getting the degree. And (I'm in the Human Resources dept.) I asked her how come she didn't go back and get the last unit, or how come I didn't have the units she DID take or college in her file, could she give them to me? Of course she couldn't.
So...when I am not around, she says things to people, but I always find out. The people she talks to, tell me....the rumors are started because people are jealous!

You can't. It's petty anyway. Just ignore it.
