Why is it such a taboo for Christians to have sex, even when it is for procreation? Our reproductive system was (if you believe in god) given to us to use it. A person who chooses to stay a virgin is as pointless as a person who decides never to breath using their mouth…

Oh and for that matter, did Mary stay a virgin? I mean she did have a companion didn’t she? (OOHH!! What a blasphemy! I implied that Mary had sex…)

She was a virgin? I guess to show the importance of Jesus. It's not a feat that can be duplicated, you know. Or, done at all, for that matter.

It is very important that Mary was a virgin before Jesus was born, because it needed to be crystal clear that His birth was miraculous, and that He was much more than a mere human being - that He was really begotten by God Himself.

However - and I know the Catholics who read this will disagree, but the evidence is right there in black and white in the Bible - after having Jesus, Mary had at least four boys and three girls: Four brothers are mentioned by name, and reference is made to 'all' of His sisters - implying at least three (Matthew 13:55-56).

So Mary's virginity at the time Jesus was conceived has absolutely nothing to do with any kind of taboo on sex. Our sexuality is given to us for the purpose of creating a permanent, exclusive love relationship with a member of the opposite sex. It can but doesn't have to be used for procreation (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:3-6).

However, we do not have to have such a relationship. God calls some to marry, some to stay single (1 Corinthians 7:7). The point is to be content with whatever He gives us (Philiippiand 4:12). And I can testify from personal experience that it is a beautiful thing to live celibate and love everyone pretty much the same.

Bottom line: Having a partner is good, and being single is good too.

Not really sure why you would think that was blasphemy. The Bible tells us that Jesus had brothers. I think you must be thinking of the Roman Catholic teaching of the perpetual virginity of Mary which is a Traditional teaching of theirs as opposed to an historical one. As For your taboo remark I have been a Christian for 24 years and I have never once heard or read anything saying that having sex was a Christian taboo. All we have to do is follow the manufacturers instructions. HE invented sex and gave us the ability to enjoy it. A person who chooses to stay a virgin is hardly "pointless" and frankly if you're smart enough to figure out how to use a keyboard , you're smart enough to figure that out too.I'm sure some who read your comments are going to suggest it might be best if you do not procreate , but I'm trusting that you'll make an effort to gain some maturity and not stay at this sad level you're at.

It was important that Mary WAS a virgin because it was prophesied that the Messiah would be born of a virgin.

It is not taboo for Christians to have sex. God created sex for husband and wife not only to procreate, but to enjoy each other and to have a close, trusting relationship with each other. Two becoming one is not just a metaphor for sex, but it is more indicative of two people becoming one solid unit, a formidible wall that is not easily destroyed, so to speak. The taboo comes from unmarried sex, which research has shown does an awful lot to undermine lasting marriages. I've known too many people who got married because 'the sex was so good,' but they never had what it took to make it through the tough times because sex clouded all the major issues and caused them to overlook things about their partner's personality that they would not have otherwise overlooked BECAUSE of sex.

Further, Mary did NOT stay a virgin. She was married and she did have a bunch of children after Jesus was born. Have you not read of Jesus' brothers in the Gospels? He even had a brother named James that traveled with Him and was one of His apostles after Jesus ascended into heaven.

You are sooooooooooooo slow.
Let me break it down to you: There's a whole lot of people in the bible who had sex, there's nothing wrong with having kids and there's no mention that it is.
The reason why it's such a big deal that Mary was a virgin is because they are trying to point out the fact that God was in fact, the only father of Jesus. After Jesus was born I'm sure her and Joseph did what every married couple did.
It is not a blasphemy to assume that they did.

Wow, lots of presumptions in this list of questions. As a Christian, I was unaware that sex was taboo. For one thing, Mary did have children after the birth of Christ which means she had sex. I thought I would mention that just in case you did not know how people have children.

The importance of Mary of being a virgin before Christ was that if she was not a virgin, this would mean that Jesus had an earthly father and would be only as other men. Mary was the vessel from whom the Son of God became flesh.

It is only within Catholicism that the perpetual virginity of Mary is taught.

I assume that this question is Roman Catholic oriented as it is this particular Christian denomination that subscribes to this doctrine known as the Virgin birth of Jesus. What this means is that Jesus was conceived by Mary through the power of God's Holy Spirit, as opposed to his being conceived through the regular conventional human method of male-female intercourse.

As for Mary remaining a virgin, again, this is a Roman Catholic doctrine, a many protestant churches believe that Mary and Joseph had other children later on after Jesus was born.

I don't know that it is taboo for Christians to have sex for procreation -- I know a number of Christian families who have more than the average 2 1/2 children. Yes the Christian view on sex is much different than the secular view -- it is held as something sacred, and wonderful, when practiced in its proper context of marriage. The social acceptance of pre-marital and extra-marital sex is very recent in our culture and is not considered morally or socially acceptable among many Christians.

Hope that answers your question.

Mary did have sex, with her husband Joseph. That is not blasphemy, that is just the truth. The Catholics say that she didn't, so that they can exalt Mary to a position higher than Jesus, her son and Word of God and Son of God. She had other children too, or are you listening to that forever the virgin made up tale?
I know one of her sons was John, and I believe the other was James. They were also His disciples. Research this yourself, if you don't believe it. It is all true.

Sex is not taboo in my christian marriage. If you read the books of Corinthians, sex within marriage is encouraged. Mary must at the point of Christ's birth have been a virgin, so there could be no doubt that the seed planted in her was from God. Up to that point she had never known man. But after that she most certainly did have intimate relations with Joseph. The N.T. speaks of Christ's brothers and sisters.

Mary was a virgin when she had Jesus and the reason that is so important is because had she not been a virgin it would not show divinity of Christ being born...Had she not been a virgin and had Christ, Christ would have been no better than us because like us, He would have been born of a mother who was not a virgin. Mary did have other children, Jesus had siblings: James, Joseph, Simon and Judas were His brothers. He also had sisters, but the bible does not mention them by name. Mary did have sex after Jesus, so she was no longer a virgin after she had her other children...that is strange that the catholics worship her and still proclaim her as being the virgin Mary...she is no longer a virgin

There is a great book that has all the answer to this question.
The Scriptures were written in Hebrew not English.
Trying to understand what the Scriptures say reading only the English translation is like repairing a 747 Jumbo Jet with a Volks wagon manual....it can't be done.
That Book title is " In Search Of A Savior"
In this book you will find that Satan has deceived the whole with its religions including the Christian religion as it is stated in Rev.12:9.
