I sometimes call to see if this Toyota Tacoma is still for sale and today when I called, I had already researched the vehicle they were selling. Their asking price was $2300 dollars over the maximum blue book price. Are most dealerships swindlers? Do they expect me to negotiate the price down by $2300 dollars. Do most of them tell wild stories about the hx of the car? The salesman expected me to believe the Toyota Tacoma was traded in for a Ford Ranger.

There are a few dealers out there who actually recondition used cars. Which includes the engine, transmission, interior, brakes, tires, suspension, et cetera. And usually they come with a warranty. You may want to inquire about that.

The dealership may just be greedy tho ;)

Each dealership is different. I have purchased many new and used cars over the years. Some dealers actually acted as though I knew more about the car and the price (invoice) than they did, and there were those who talked to me as if that car was the only one on the planet and they could get anything for it. But to your question ... Often Toyota vehicles can fetch the sticker and above ... they are vehicles in demand. Maybe this Tacoma was in extremely good condition, low miles, highly optioned, etc. It may indeed sell above book in certain markets. But you are correct in doing your homework. If you really want this Tacoma, ask the salesman for its history. Contact the previous owner to ask about condition if you want. And certainly ask the salesman why the price is over blue book. His answer will tell you whether he is playing fair or just trying to get over. There are honest sales people, and there are those who literally wait for someone who wants a vehicle so badly, who is not too informed on price-- and the salesman makes a killing. The key is never to want a vehicle so much that you will pay whatever is asked. If the dealer won't negotiate fairly, leave. You will find another model. In this day and age with internet, it won't be hard. Good luck

I am the Internet Manager at a large dealership in CT. Toyota's are hot vehicles right now. My advice if you're truly interested in a particular vehicle is to go in and check it out thoroughly. Get a carfax to make sure things are OK, and then offer an amount lower than you want to pay. Have them come back with a counter offer.... If they come back and say they can't do it, or are not even close to where you need to be. Say thanks and get up and walk....If you really like a vehicle, say so....but don't say anymore....don't give any clues. As was stated previously, there are lots of cars/trucks out there. Do your research and don't let anyone rush you!
