AMERICAN FRIES. Drives the French nuts. But for them it's a short trip anyway.

Actually in France they are just called "des frites" not French fries...and the best frites you can eat are made in BELGIUM not France! Belgians are known for their frites..national dish "Des Moules & des Frites" (Steamed mussels and fries with mayonnaise).
The germans call them "pommes frites".
In Spain "patatas fritas"...
The british call them "chips" and what in the US are "potato chips" the british call potato "crisps".

And I think we should call them what we have always called them,
besides, if you go into a restaurant and ask for a burger and fries... what would you get? A piece of minced/chopped meat called a "hamburger" because a german immigrant from Hamburg created them at the beginning of the 20th. century and some deep fried potato stick pieces that someone named "french" fries who knows way back when!

Pomme frites...means fried potatoes. That's what they call them in France and Holland, and I think in Germany, too. I think we should keep calling them French Fries. Why change?

are you talkin bout long, thin fries (like mc donalds'?) or bout thin round frieds potatoes (we can find in little packets) ?
we call the first ones "frites" (or "fries" in english) simply, and the sec. ones "chips".
wish a great day to everyone.

Germans generally use the same words for things. The french want to stay 'pure' so they usually "franconise" their words in one way or another.
