By monitoring brain waves. When the brain no longer emits these low level radio waves, a person is considered "brain dead". And I know of no case in which anyone has recovered conscience or coherency once they have reach this point.
But philsophically no one is sure, as no one has been able to come back to tell the tale!

Everything dies, although I learned when I went to nursing school the human brain feels no pain,it's the actual damage to the brain that mess you up.For example if you get shot in the head the damage that the bullet itself causes is what effects you. They showed us a film when they started surgery on someone his diagnosis was tremors they forgot to numb him and they all kinda looked at each other like uh oh,and they asked him was he o.k and he said he was fine. Some of your cells still function but you feel nothing.

When you die, your blood stops circulating and your organs cannot get oxygen, including your brain. When you're dead, you are dead all over. Now, spirit...that's a whole other chapter!
