I seldom if ever look at the receipt taped to the bag from BK but today as I sat in traffic, I was astounded that they charged .40 for the cheese. I also noticed $7 tendered after I had given the cashier a $10. I called the manager and he said there's a 7.5% tax charged for fast food. Now, after he did his math he said I had actually been undercharged; he came up with 6.26. I paid 6.16 total. I did some calculations and came to the conclusion the tax(.46) is closer to 8%. The manager also said the register computer automatically rounds up/down the cash tendered to the next full dollar amount. I live in NC and the tax on food from the grocery is 7%. Guys look, I know its only a few pennies, but I hate the idea of being ripped off even for that amount so humor me if I'm wrong, okay.

$5.70 x 1.075 is $6.13 to the nearest penny. Simple math. What's their problem?

That sucks that it happened to you. And if happened to you, it happened to everyone that has been in that store. That's a lot of money that Burger King is making off those machines that round up. You were supposed to be charged $6.13. But you paid $6.26. That's 13 cents higher than what you were supposed to be charged. Now suppose that 10,000 people come into that Burger King per month. That's an extra $13,000 that Burger King is getting because of faulty cash registers! Multiply that times 12 and you get $156,000 a year! See how these companies make money? It sucks! Good thing you checked your receipt. I know I will from now on.

I went to Mickey's one time, and ordered a burger that cost $3.50. I gave them a 5, and the cashier had a problem. The readout on the cash register didn't work. He called the manager over to ask what my change should be. The manager went to get a calculator.
Sometimes they're not the brightest bulbs in the string. You gotta watch 'em.
In your case, I think they're ripping EVERYBODY off. If they can't program the cash register to take the exact applicable tax, to the nearest penny, then that's false advertising, maybe fraud. They can get a better register or use a calculator, if that's the case.

Ummmm, well, they way you're saying it, the tax would be $42.75, making your burger cost $48.45, hardly a value no matter where you live. If you mean that NY tax is 7 1/2 percent, then the tax would be .426, rounding up, would be .43 cents, making your burger cost $6.13. Man, I won't be visiting New York any time soon, if a burger costs that much! LOL! But hey, in Ohio, they charge you a fountain pop tax, .10 cents I believe. Probably where they got the extra dime.... so NY must do it too. But yeah, if I were you, I'd count on .08% tax, then if things are a little less, you wont feel so bad.

You should have paid $6.13 and were charged $6.26. They get away with it because most people are gonna say its only 13 cents and not fight it. As several people have pointed out, that comes to several thousand dollars a year free money for them. Have you ever heard the old saying that it's easier to take $1 from a million people than to take $1,000,000 from one person? That's exactly what this place is doing.

$6.13 is what you should've paid. However, I've noticed the fast food places have higher taxes than other stores (where I live.) I pay $2.13 for a $1.99 fast food meal, for example.
Also, if you post this question in the "math" category, you'll get a lot of accurate, enthusiastic replies. :o)
