I am trying to find out what post office/area it came from

Look at the postmark.

You probably won't be able to. You're getting answers saying to check the post mark and yes, it's true that you will see where the mail was processed, for example, St. Paul, Minnesota. This doesn't mean it came from that city though. It could have come from any cities post office and sent to a processing city or it may have been originally dropped off in a public mailbox. You really won't know. Remember the anthrax letters that went out for awhile? They didn't know where they were coming from, just where the mail was processed.

Look at the stamp that was applied over the postal stamp...it should say which post office it came from...

Check the cancellation stamp on the envelope. It's on top of the stamp.
