They were used for duck hunting long ago, then as protection for coach horses, sleeping in the stables with them. The dogs ran beside the horses and coaches during the day, helping to clear the way.
They became used with the firewagons. A red hat was put on them and they ran ahead of the firewagons when needed.
That is why they are mascots today of fire companies.
