Surfers always seem like they have abs of steel and yet it doesn't seem like they work out multiple hours a day. What is it about surfing that is such a great workout?

It requires the use of all your muscles. Your legs for kicking; arms, back, and pectorals (chest muscles) for pulling; and abs, shoulders, and neck for balancing.

Surfing is a great way to build upper body strength because 98% of surfing is paddling. Paddle to catch a wave, paddle into the wave, and paddle back out. You usually have to be pretty fit to be a surfer. You have to have great balance too, to stay on the wave and you have to have good leg strength too to move the board. Have you ever carried a surf board? They're heavy! Imagine moving one with your body! My boyfriend has been surfing for years though...and he is a bit chubby. So you don't HAVE to have great abs to surf....but it makes it easier.

Swimming by itself is an excellent workout because it uses all your muscles without the joint stress. Now add to that balancing on a board while tons of water try to suck you under and you can see why surfers have such buff bods.
