Hi, I am from Taiwan and I got an English question. It goes like this:"Devoted to defending lost causes and beautiful women, Tanner possesses an array of talents and connections so singular that he is a natural for perilous top-secret missions--the sort that will retroactively cease to exist if something goes wrong.
Please tell me, what does "the sort" refer to here. Does it refer to "missions" or "Tanner", the secret agent?
Thank you very much for your answers.

Well.. keep in mind that the subject is: MISSIONS.. then based on that. the words "THE SORT" refers to "missions" but in this sense, it refers to "the kind that" so instead of saying what was said, we could word it this way...

"Tanner possesses an array of talents and connections so singular that he is a natural for perilous to- secret missions, THE KIND (or THE TYPE) that would ....etc etc etc"

i think of a few human beings seek advice from faith as "brainwashing" via fact they in my opinion sense they have been inspired via kin and society (predominately from an early age) to have self assurance in a faith they might no longer thoroughly have self assurance in. hence, those human beings are left with a feeling of being wrongly inspired via the precise same human beings they have confidence. The term "brainwashing" is obviously an enormously detrimental term to throw around, and would desire to be particularly of an over-exaggeration, yet human beings hence are often describing the term from a private point.

I believe it refers to the missions. If they go wrong, they will be officially denied, as if they never happened.

"Mom Knows" has it right. The point is the mission's existence will be denied if it happens to fail.
