At my grandparents house, there are multiple plum trees. On every tree the plums are covered with a light dusting of something. It can easily be rubbed off but it doesn't show on your fingers. The plums look light bluish-purple with the dust and without it they are the regular color of the type of plums, dark purple. What is covering the plums?

The dust on the plums as well as on grapes and some other fruits is natural pectin, the stuff you buy and put in the recipe to make jelly.

Be aware of insecticides! Be sure to wash the plums before you eat them. You could get VERY sick if you don't.
