A melon should feel heavy for its size and be free of any dents or bruises and have a dry rind. The outer color and shape should be uniform. If the rind has netting, it should stand out boldly over the entire outer surface.
Select a cantaloupe by smelling the soft stem end; sweetness means ripeness.
Watermelon varieties should have pale yellow bottoms and dull, not waxy skin. Much to popular belief, thumping a watermelon is not a good way to determine ripeness.
For other melon varieties, look for a slightly soft stem and a fruity aroma.
Cut melons should have firm, well colored meat and not look dry, mealy or stringy.
