Depends on how much energy your 5 year old boy has for the time you stay in NYC. Toys R Us in Time Square and FAO Swartz Would be the best places to go and may be the only 2 places your son would want to go.

There is also a zoo located in Central Park that would be great to take him too. Maybe a lot of walking in the zoo, But NYC is a lot of walking as well, and has a lot of Tall building.

The Central Park Zoo for sure, and there are so many fun playgrounds around there too. In Central Park there is also now some little fair for young children with all sorts of rides at Wollman Rink. Also, the Sony building on Madison Ave. and 50 something street is for free and you can play with all of the technology and it's very interactive. I think kids also like seeing the Intrepid which is a retired aircraft carrier with tons of old planes and fun things to explore.

How about the Museum of Natural History? What five year old kid wouldn't like to see dinosaur bones?

Eat at the Jeckyll & Hude's Restaurant on 6th Avenue, half a block south of Central Park. It's a theme restaurant, but not too scary for little kids.
