For a "cozy" feel:
1. Use warm color on the walls... a slightly lighter shade for the ceiling. (browns, taupes, yellow, oranges, reds) -- not primary colors. (Ralph Lauren colors are a good guide).
2. Comfy, overstuffed furniture. Pillows.
3. Lots of art on the walls -- doesn't have to be expensive. Funky and fun are good.
4. Rich looking fabrics for the windows (although I have little lace curtains in my (red) kitchen.
5. Thick area rugs that feel good on your feet.
6. (most important) Lighting. Use incandescent bulbs-- never flourescent. And don't use overhead lighting, either. "Paint" your room with warm light-- and don't forget uplights.
Good luck and have fun!!

for me I like country or English casual. My home is very comfortable. Use comfy furniture in soft tones, decor accents are nice but don't put them everywhere. Its okay to have blank walls and spaces. Arrange furniture in a group so people can chat without being on the other side of the room. Remember furniture doesn't always have to be against a wall. I watch a lot of House & Garden tv and get some great ideas from them. Find a focal point and work from it. It could be a painting on t/wall, a fireplace etc. Choose things that make you comfy and cosy.

Definitely a home filled with things that tell a story about a person's life, personality and family. I have things displayed that my children made when they were in preschool and grade school. They mean more to me than expensive artwork. I also have a shelf that is made of 25 cubes and each cube represents a place we have traveled, an event in life or something we love (like one has dolphins I have collected.) People always walk around and look at everything. It is neatly displayed and tells our story.
