yes the akc web site is good for learning about particular breeds and their characteristic, but adopt from rescue groups!! they are usually mixed breeds, but if there are two types of breeds you like a mixed breed is good to get the best of both worlds!! I adopted a dog that is German Shepherd Greyhound mix and is quiet like a greyhound, streamlined and small like a greyhound but has the ears, face playfullness and spunkyness of a german shepherd. I also have a chihuahua dachshund mix. she is dominant chihuahua in the face, ears, personality and height, and has dachschund body length and bow legs. Mixed dogs are so much fun to watch them grow up cause you're always guessing and they just surprise you. I had fun with both of mine and they're my babys! Save a life!! Adopt one until there are none!!!

you should get a boxer. they are very protective, they are guard dogs, they are extremely friendly, they get along great with small children, and they are so cute, especially when puppies, but are better when gotten from a rescue. http://www.boxerangelsrescue.com
http://www.boxerrescue.com or search http://www.google.com for "boxer rescues" to find one close to you
