Consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. Greyhounds retire between 2-5 years old (well after thier kidneys have developed so they can wait without having to use paper in the house). Greys are super indoor dogs - they are nicknamed the "45 mph couch potato" because they sleep up to 18 hours per day. If you adopt a grey they will sleep the whole time you are gone and won't miss you. They will adjust their schedule to fit your lifestyle (i.e. they will be awake from 4pm - bedtime and will get used to expending their energy during this time and will sleep overnight and during the day). For more information on retired racing greys please visit http://www.greyhoundpets.org or please feel free to e-mail me.

Sounds to me that you need a cat, a gold fish or a bird. Dogs need attention and a lot of it. If you can't supply the time that the animal needs then you will have a disobedient dog that makes messes in your house and is too hyper and then you will not want it any more so it will end up in a shelter, like where I work, and maybe someone else will want it but most of the time no one will so then we have to euthanize it and then I am the bad guy, but in truth it started out with the owner who didn't have the time for the dog in the first place. If you get a dog, probably a puppy you need to take time to train it everyday. Good Luck!!!

Any dog makes a good housedog. But you need to get an adult and not a puppy. A puppy can't hold it as long. Also the smaller the dog, the smaller the bladder so I think a bigger dog would be better for the situation. No certain breed would be best. Try looking on http://www.petfinder.com and find a dog in your area that needs a home.

Actually, and you're going to be really throwen off by this and it probably will raise some argument but I recommend a rottweiler. Now unlike common believe rottweilers are not mean dogs. There's a very simple statement that can explain a rottweilers temperament. They treat you like you treat them. If you hit you rottweiler in a negative way, like for no reason, then they will probably bite you because they think that's the way to be. But, if you spank them because they did something bad then they understand and will feel bad. I have a rottweiler named Miss Kitty and she has unconscionable love for my family and I. They do well by themselves but they are social animals. So, when you get home make sure you talk to them and love them. Plus, they make very good guard dogs when your not home but when you get home they turn into big babies.
I home you find a dog that suits you well! Good Luck.
Oh and don't get a Chihuahua they don't do well alone and become very nervous. A lab would also work well!
Once again good luck with your new dog!

None, only because if it's one dog by his/herself, like anyone- they'll become lonely and bored and wont have the exercise they crave, especially if they're a puppy when you get them.
If you want a dog, you should also be able to spend lots of time with him/her. If you want a dog badly but cant do anything about your schedule- perhaps get two dogs?
With two dogs, they can play with eachother during the day while you're gone so they both arent actually lonely. But if you do get two dogs, make sure they're of the relative size of eachother, both are spayed/neutered, and actually get along with eachother...
It's best to try and put them together little by little, for longer periods of time and only when you're around at first so that they can get used to eachother and not harm one another.
After a little while they'll be getting along well and wont ever be lonely when you're away. :)

A retired greyhound would be fabulous! Not only do you get to skip the annoying puppy phase, but you get to rescue a dog (or more than one!). My greys are home for 8-10 hours during the week and do fine. They sleep about 18 hours a day anyway.

Breed depends on you. Dogs sleep most of the day and they don't have good sense of time. Don't worry about working. Trian them to go outside and a pee pad so you won't have accidents in the house.

A stuffed one that lays quietly on the bed and never required any walking or attention. It's not fair to expect the dog to be alone, unattended and unexercised for this length of time...
