an SLR will definatly take much better pictures then a 35mm but are often more expensive. though if you are in the market for a new camera i would suggest a digital SLR. SLR stands for single lens refraction. it allows for less distortion in the picture. also you have much more control over the camera. you can adjust the focus, light amount and many other things manually. recently digital cameras have dropped significatly in price and you can get a good 6mp and above digital slr for around 5 or 6 hundred. film cameras are moving closer and closer to obsolete. it would be a waste to buy one.

I trust you've hired a pro to cover your wedding day ;-)
A 35mm camera is any camera that takes ordinary rolls of 35mm film. This can be anything from a $10 point & shoot to a professional Canon to a Leica.
An SLR is a camera where the viewfinder shows you the image though the lens - as opposed to peeping through a seperate window alongside the lens.
With digital cameras, there's a difference between compact cameras (that use an electronic viewfinder) and digital SLR cameras (that still use an optical viewfinder like in the film days).
Even for casual users, digital SLR cameras beat compacts in two ways:
* They're instantaneous. With candids, kids, sports, etc, you'll always get the shot. With a compact camera, everything takes forever and by the time the camera fires, the moment is often already gone.
* They let you select the best lens for the occasion. With compact cameras you just get the one fixed lens for all occasions.
Other advantages include better low light performance and more control over depth of field. In all, this makes for more keepers and better quality pictures.
Digital SLR cameras also have two big disadvantages:
* Cost. You can get a nice compact camera for just $300, whereas a dSLR setup will cost you $800+
* Volume. You can slip a compact camera in your shirt pocket. A dSLR with two lenses means carrying around a camera bag.
In the end, it's a personal call. You'll just have to weigh the pros and cons.

SLR=Single lens reflex and these can be digital or 35mm but the 35mm Slr'S Are muchbetter than digital one, it means that you most often on 35mm SLR's have all control of the photos exposure,speed,etc... what happens in a normal 35mil is you look through a simple eyepiece above the lens and dont see exactly what you are shooting and these photos are bad quality, on an slr u see exactly what you shoot, there is a system of mirrors and prisms which let you do this when you depres the shutter button, the mirror flips up and the shutter opens for a set amount of time to expose the film then the mirror flips back down , these photos are beutiful quality.
Dont try and contradict me im a professional photographer,,Josh
Larry J is wrong real photographers use 120 format Film, Never digital

SLR refers to the viewing system - "Single Lens Reflex."
35 mm refers to the film size. This is the most common film size these days.
There are SLR's that are not 35 mm and 35 mm cameras that are not SLR's.
The "ultimate" 35 mm camera in many people's opinion is made by Leica and it is not an SLR.
If you know very little about photography, it doesn't matter what you try to use. There is SO much more to wedding photography than the type of camera you use. If it really matters, hire a pro. If you can't afford a pro, you MUST have a friend who knows enough about photography to do a half-way decent job - at least do a better job than you would do. You can pay him/her if you want, and it would still be cheaper than the cost of almost any camera worth using for this kind of job. Maybe your photographer friend would give you the pictures as a wedding present. I know I did that many times back in my college days when I had no income to speak of. I gave them one set of prints along with the negatives. Then when they were earning some money in a few years, they could have nice prints made from the negatives on their own.
