When you dream your body is paralyzed so that you do not injur yourself in reacting to your dream. Sometimes when you wake from the dream the paralysis does not immediately go away so you can't move for a while.
This is the origin of the idea of the 'nightmare' which was thought to be some supernatural creature sitting on the sleepers body so that they could not move.
