I am hoping the answer is "yes." My landlord has a few fancy plants in our hallway between apartments, and I would like to do this if it helps for avoiding my neighbor.
However, I suppose I could restrain myself from doing this if it isn't considered very polite...

You might consider carrying a BOOM BOX (on you ear) while walking. I have seen many people "tweeking" the knobs and controls as I bark "Howdie!" and they claim they did not hear me.
Or...... you could become a BOOK WORM (carry a book with you, and claim to be so INVOLVED in it while walking) and claim that you were SO INVOLVED in the book as to hear anybody.

The answer is no it isn't polite. If they see you doing the nose dive. If not well no harm done.
Morally i suppose it is wrong. rather than changing your behavior and possibly hurting an innocent plant.
Then when you see the neighbor and they say hi. Say hi. It doesn't hurt anything. If they ignore you, you under no obligation to acknowledge them again.
If this neighbor you avoid because their someone you don't like and talks your ear off.
Then nicely say." You seem like a decent person, but i am not interested in having a friendship with you." It may seem cruel but it will make your stunt days a thing of the past.
Been there and had to do it.

You are never obliged to say hello back to someone if you don't feel like it. My god, if I returned every hello that stupid guys yell out to me when I'm walking down the street, I'd never get to where I'm going. And you don't have to hide behind plants. Just don't make eye contact, and ignore the person.

Yes it is entirely appropriate if the person you are hiding from is my former nutty neighbor whom I see occasionally. I've abandoned an entire buggy load of groceries to get out of a store before she sees me. She just grates at my nerves and I can't get away from her.

Yes, if caught, just say you thought tha plant was talking to you. He'll avoid you after that.

wave back but fast-walk outta there while screaming,"i have had the stomach flu and diarrhea for a while now.must go,bye!" your neighbor will understand your situation and not see it as impolite at all.

well it depends, if they saw you then it probably isnt polite. but if they havn't then make a run for it (or dive behind a plant) ^_^
