Why is it that the only people on here that down-grade the military, British or other countries, are generrally the ones that have no idea because they have not served their country? And would be the first to look to a soldier to do the hard work for them!

People have the freedom to say what they want because countless soldiers gave their lives for that freedom!

Ellie29. No one's life is less valuable than that of a soldier! I have never said that!
The road sweeper does an honest days work, but I can't tell you what he has to experience in his day to day chores! I have never been one.
The child that struggles with cancer? I can't tell you how she feels deep down inside.
I do not put the military above anyone, all I am saying is, that it is easy to de-cry something because one has a personal view of it!
Soldiers do a job, they do it to the best of their ability, as does the road sweeper.
But time and again, squaddies put their neck on the line for others, yes there are good and bad soldiers, I'm sure that there are good and bad road sweepers!

Zulu 9, I agree whole heartily with everything you say. Soldiers get called to fill in for, striking firemen and all-sorts of other people such as ambulance service and get to carry out the **** jobs like burning animals and cleaning up the foot and mouth epidemic. You don't catch us complaining about only getting a 3% pay rise compared to the fire services 10 to 15% and we are the people that put our lives on the line daily for everyone in this country and stand in for all these winging gits that are complaining they don't get paid enough. Try doing our job and getting paid less for it, we are not complaining.

I am in the military and have served Queen and Country on numerous operations in the last 11 years. Why don't all of the rest of the loud mouthed bigots go forth and multiply. (Those with Military background will know what that means. For all you not in the know of military speech, it means...................go **** yourselves)

What can I say? Is it 'down-grading' the military if one doesn't believe in the tasks that have been set them? I don't think so. Iraq, Afghanistan, these are the big conflicts in the media at the moment, (of course the Lebanon too, not that it seems UN troops are fully deployed there yet.) It's a hard challenge I suppose- of course I know nothing of what it is to be a soldier. Would you say that removes my ability to reason whether a war is just or unjust? I don't believe so. If it did, the only ones who could discuss war would be the troops themselves... me, I'm not convinced Iraq and Afghanistan are worthwhile. Are the military at fault, or the politicians? I believe the latter, but the military must do the government's will, not so?

You're saying that you have to have experienced warfare before you can criticise the troops. I'm saying that we shouldn't necessarily support the deployment of troops whatever the circumstance, because the reasons they are sent into combat zones are not always good ones.

As Buzzard has stated some feel they have an honest objection not to the military but how it is being used. Certainly I think all of us in the free nations in question can respect that. However, what those who oppose their governments use of the military don't understand is that much of the dissent about the war has to do with progress and whom is doing what to whom. Who is in a better position to have a clear perspective on that than the troops who are there? The second thing they don't realize is the damage that their comments can do. Do they understand the effects of massive protests in a soldiers own country on his morale? Do they understand how encouraged our enemies become at the same thing. It is now a known fact that protests going on in the USA during the Vietnam war had an effect both on the North Vietnamese strategy and their treatment of our troops held prisoner. I can guarantee that not a single life will be saved by protests, but they can lead to prolonging the war and the increase in loss of life. God bless all of the allied troops....Aussies, Brits, Canadians, and Americans.

Well Zulu9 what makes you think that ordinary, decent, hard working citizens are not serving their countries in the same way...after all its a fair proportion of the taxes that the people on here pay that goes toward funding the military, not all our taxes I grant you, but certainly some.

Do we put less emphasis on the road sweeper serving his citizens by keeping the streets clean, than of a soldier fighting in conflict... is the road sweepers life less valuable than that of a soldier? Not in my book, I'm afraid.

I'm sick of the military thinking they somehow do a more worthwhile job than the rest of us, with their brainwashed opinions that are probably drummed into them by the institution that they serve. They bleat on here on how brave they are, are they braver than the child that tries to beat cancer,? Are they braver than the war child that has to face the world alone after she hides under the bed and watches her family be gunned down in cold blood by the so called "liberators", again, not in my book.

I serve my country, I work hard, I pay my taxes, I've never claimed a penny off the state, I don't commit crime, I get involved in my community, I don't need to hold a gun or drop bombs on the enemy (and innocent civilians) to feel that I'm serving my country.

I'm not going to start a debate whether we should be in Iraq or Afghanistan or Lebanon, that has nothing to do with your question.

Now, lets talk about those cows being highly effective killing machines... I really don't think we should rule out the cows you know!!!!! I think they are secretly evil creatures waiting to take over the world, we either get with them now, or we will all die under them.

Well Zulu, I haven't enough experience of these sites to know if many people do down grade the military. I think they do a tremendous job in the most life threatening conditions on earth. I'm grateful to every one of them. May they all come home safely.
Footnote:
We are not losing in Iraq, as I notice some one has commented above and I don't think it is our intention to WIN anything. It is to succeed in the task of keeping two opposing factions of the same religion from tearing each other to pieces ( did I say the same religion, hard to credit isn't it ? ) whilst those in that country who are not insane, try to establish a democracy.

I think it is because unlike all the other vocations in life, a soldiers is the one that lets all the other professions carry on. Also in this country the soldier chooses to serve his queen and country, and protect the weak. Sadly the weak are the ones who squaddie bash.

Ignorance seems no prohibitor, from what I've seen of Answers! But maybe a lot of people are questioning or criticising the deployment and political exploitation of armed forces, rather than the individual personnel

It is always easy to stand back and judge. It is very easy to pass judgement when you are not envolved, and you don't really know what is going on. These same people would be the first to beg for help or complain about nothing being done if a terrorist strike occurs again.
