Leukemia - abnormal proliferation of white blood cells (neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes or their precursors).
It usually involves the bone marrow, so the normal function of marrow is interfered.
Normal marrow components are :
white blood cells needed to fight infection - so the problem will be increased risk of developing infection when you have less normal white blood cells in the circulation;
red blood cells - so less oxygen carrying capacity or anemia when your red cells cannot be normally produced due to leukemic cells;
platelets - which will be decreased resulting in bleeding condition.
In addition, the abnormal white cells can be increased in number so much that they actually slow down the blood circulation resulting in stroke, and other conditions associated with lack of blood supply to various organs.
Certain type of leukemia (AML, M3) can also release granules with chemical that can cause abnormal bleeding (DIC). DIC can result in abnormal clotting and bleeding and can harm the liver, kidney and lung.
