Anyone can be a Father, however it take a specail person to be a Dad. Look make sure first and formost he loves and cares about children. He needs to be a very responsiable man who can handle parenthood, responsibilty with money and bill, and a man that spends quality time with the family. Common sense in this area is realy all it takes. However, if in dought, ask your friends and family what they think about the man in question. Be carefull men know how to play a woman until they have you. I hear men talking about it all the time. Real men are out there but not in abundance.

First children no matter how old get their cue from you. If you are in a happy, healthy relationship. Children see it and feel it. Watch to see how he behaves around children, younger siblings for example.
I find men that haven't been around children very much have a harder time dealing with children. Find out by asking him how he was raised and interacting with his family. Sometimes parenting can be learned behavior. Following suit by the way the were raised.
Some one that believes that children's needs come first. Seeing them as defenseless, learning, little sponges. Usually someone that has empathy for animals, shows kindness and love. Is a good candidate.

I think the fundamental one, that few couples seem to discuss until after marriage (which is too late), is that they share your values in how you bring up a child. This can be such a major source of contention.
Some people have children with the one that gives them all the passion - but this is never a good indicator in my book of father material.

Someone that you are in love with, that you want to spend the rest of your life with. That's all that matters. Security is most important for children, and that means two parents who stay together.

the qualities I feel are important are:
a motivator, a supporter, a provider, someone to play with them at times, someone to help teach them what's right and wrong, someone to help with discipline and will stand behind you when you say NO...and or Yes.
