Eggs and milk products are in some circumstances grouped together under the heading of dairy, probably because fresh eggs were often sold by milkmen. For example, the Open Directory Project at one point listed cooking eggs as a subcategory of cooking dairy products. However, dictionary definitions of "dairy" are limited to milk products and, as a result, will always exclude eggs and egg products.

They are classified as a meat in "the" food pyramid, but since the "the" food pyramid isn't some kind of god that tells us what to eat, I suppose you could think of it as a dairy product or something with a category of its own. But yes, it's rich in protein. Also, many vegetarians eat eggs (normal chicken eggs and not the ones with embyros inside) just like they drink milk from cows and other animals.

That's a good point considering "dairy " refers to milk products produced by cattle, sheep or goats. Eggs should really be classed as Poultry as they come from chickens.

A dairy is a facility for the extraction and processing of animal milk (mostly from cows, sometimes from buffalo, sheep or goats) and other farm animals, for human consumption. A dairy farm produces milk and a dairy factory processes it into a variety of dairy products.

(In New Zealand English "a dairy" means a corner shop, and "dairy factory" is the term for what is elsewhere a dairy). Wikepedia

For newsgirlinos: Eggs are also animal protein.
It may not seem logical that eggs are categorised as 'dairy' but retail outlets persistently clump these and milk products as such.

Dairy means milk products.

Eggs belong in the meat group. Pay more attention in school and you'd know this.

Eggs are protein. Normally they're grouped with meat and fish (in the food pyramid anyway)

Eggs are in a catergory all of their own! You get meat, fish, fungi, dairy, fruit and veg, and eggs. It's like mushrooms, people tend to lump them under veg, but stictly speaking they come under fungi...
