How about a P-51 Mustang! Ok, a little outdate but still one of the best planes ever to fight.

F-18 if I have to choose a modern plane. That is because it is perfect for aircraft carriers.

The F-15 C with AESA modifications is the most state of the art at the air superiority mission. The F/A-18E Superhornet is also very good, but it is designed as a multi-role, not a dedicated air-superiority fighter. The F-16 is good, and some versions are air-superiority-focused, but it is smaller, and doesn't have the avionics, speed, nor the carrying capacity of the F-15C.

As opposed to what was said above, the F-22 is the best fighter out or planned for some time. The F-35, when it is released, will be a multi-role aircraft, not as stealthy nor as capable as the F-22.

The F15 is probably the best. However you must remember that its often the pilot who makes the plane not the other way around. Nonetheless the F 15 is widely regarded as the best fighter og the three. The F 15 however is now in excess of 20 years old and is becoming "long in the tooth" despite repeated upgrades. It will soon be eclipsed by other aircraft in our arsenal.

No question that as a "pure" air superiority fighter, the F-15 is the best, and has been for twenty years. Its time is nearing an end though with the coming of the F-22.

Well, opinions are like noses, everyone has one, and they all smell. Since you asked, I like the F-15.

But all three of them are based on 1970's technology. All three were tested at Edwards AFB in southern California. The F/A-18 was originally the YF-17, which competed against the YF-16 for the Air Force. Ultimately, the Navy had it updated and redesigned for their purposes. The Superhornet version is state-of-the-art. The various upgrades to the others make them very deadly and accurate, and each have been modified for various uses besides their original mission.

The F-35 JSF is going to reign supreme when it goes into production for all three services.
