What exactly makes it corrosive, is it the primer or the powder, or both combined? I shoot quite a bit of surplus ammo marked as corrosive and have been curious quite some time as to why exactly it's corrosive. I have all the tips and tools I need for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo(windex works great, so does 50-50 mix of ammonia and soap water)

the primer is the corrosive but the powder fouls the barrel

its the primer that erodes and pits the barrel. as you said windex neutralizes the "salts" from the corrosive primers.

Its the priming chemicals in the primer... Mostly, mercury or some sort of mercuric acid.
