I had a maid and matron--my mother was the matron. This is a perfectly good choice and can spare a lot of feelings. "Duties" sort of fall into place anyway, and you probably have enough to worry about without making them each an itemized list. See if they'll work together on things. Ask one to hold your husband's ring and the other to straighten your dress/hold your bouquet. Hopefully they'll start knocking themselves out to help you and you won't have to worry about that!

I don't see why you can't do that but how will you have them walk down the aisle. The person that walks last is considered the maid of honor. I guess they could walk down the aisle together. You should make a list of responsibilities and then sit down with them and ask what each of them would like to choose out of your list of responsibilities. I think if you make a list for them, you will be giving them a choice rather than telling them what you expect of them and it will help create a buffer between them because there are always unexpected ideas and issues that occur during preparation of wedding showers, rehearsal dinner, bachlorette party, and the final wedding day.

I wouldn't split their duties for them. I'd give them the list of the Maid of Honor's responsibilities (and believe me, there are a lot!); let them decide how to divide it up - what things they want to work together on and what things can be handled individually. I'd take them to a nice restaurant for lunch and get it all hammered out so everyone knows exactly what their responsibilities are. I think you did a smart thing to pick two! Your biggest dilemma is to figure out the standing arrangements up front - one is them is gong to be right next to you and the other isn't. Perhaps whoever does the most of the responsibilities?

It is fine to have two MOH. They can get together and divide the duties. It will turn out fine. Let both of them know they are CO-Maids of Honor.

At first we had two co-maids-of-honor. One was my sister, and one was his. My sister is in college and out of the area, so his sister was going to take care of the stuff NOW.

However, when she decided to get married to win more inheritence, she was booted down to groomswoman. She's still in our wedding though--just not as high on the list.

I had a MOH and an honorary maid of honor. My bridesmaids all worked together on everything. They communicated with each other on who should do what.

Let them know what you expect of all of them upfront and they can determine who does what.

My maid of honor was my sister.. and my secondary sponsors are my friends... bridesmaids were my husband's sister...

Well, we talked about what will happen at the church and the reception, they have specific tasks to do so we don't have to rush and who's going to work on things....
