We have a Minature Pincher that is about a year and a half old. She is either partially or completely deaf. What is the best way to break her of barking?

I have taken her to the vet and do regularly. The veterinarian is who diagnosed the problem, but he wasn't sure if she was partially or fully deaf. She knows how to sit using a hand gesture, but won't quit barking.

Min Pins are big time barkers. Deaf or not they love to bark.
I would get a shock collar that also has a vibrate feature on it and use it not to shock her with but use the vibrate feature to get her attention. Actually a shock collar made for small dogs wouuld be perfect for her as you could get her attention right now even if you could not reach her. I would use it on the lowest setting or the vibrate mode.

Dogs respond to sign, even better than spoken words. You should be able to work well with her if you both can develop a sign language between you. It could be fun too because others will have no idea what you two are up to especially if the don't KNOW your dog is deaf.

You can use conventional training methods for her barking. She'll get the message. Don't give up. She's gonna be a lot of fun.

She can't hear herself so that's a problem. When she barks, get her attention with a touch on the neck, make a grabbing motion with your fingers. This snaps her out of her fixation to whatever she is barking at. My daughter is deaf and I applied modified sign language to a friends deaf dog with great results.Since most dog commands need no verbal prompting actually, training should be very easy.

Are you sure she is deaf? Most deaf dogs don't usually bark alot because they dont know they have a voice. Maybe she likes to hear herself regardless of what you think. That said why don't you take her to the vet to make sure this is the issue and your vet could direct you to someone who might be able to help you train your dog.

Try stern hand gestures. Any time she's next to you and barking, give her a light tap on her nose and wave your finger in a stern way. I'm not sure that or anything else you try will work, you could take her to an experienced trainer and they will figure out something to do for her and tell you how to do it.

My results: We trained my 6yo pitbull Jammer to stop peeing in the house in just 6 days. Followed the simple steps. I just had to use the Dog discipline magic system found on google.

Um, everytime she barks I would Spritz a little water on her from a plant mister or a throughly rinsed out Windex bottle. Or buy one at wal-mart they are like $1.50 . They would be by the ironing items. OR, i would call and ask the Vet's office.

Hand signals are best and get her into a training class if you aren't already on one that will make it easier on both you and her. http://www.deafdogs.org/ this is a good website I found all about training and deaf dogs.
