You already know that what your parents believe is wrong. Abuse of illegal or prescription drugs is a problem shared by every ethnic group in the world. Dealers come in every color, shape, size, nationality, religion, race, etc.

I feel certain that your parents only what they believe to be in your best interest. Unfortunately, the job of being a parent does not come with an instruction booklet. This means that parents make mistakes. One tough chore of being a child is to try to point out the errors without showing any disrespect. Perhaps you need to put some thought into how you approach the subject. I suggest that you give them names of popular black men whose reputations have no history of drug abuse. Some names that come to mind include, Michael Jordan, Bill Cosby, Al Roker, Montel, Williams, Tiger Woods, and Dulé Hill. Certainly, your parents would not object if you married someone with reputations such as theirs. The important thing for you to remember is to show the proper respect to your parents and have this conversation when nobody is already upset. Keep your own emotions under tight control and steer away from arguing. If tempers begin to flare, find a graceful way to end the conversation. There are times when no matter what you try, you cannot get the other person to understand your point-of-view. When that happens, you must agree to disagree on the topic in order to maintain the peace.

Like the others that asked about your statement of being part African, I too am curious if you moved to the US from Africa. My personal belief is that if you were born in the US then there should be no hyphen in your nationality. In other words, when born in the US you are an American. The only way to be an African-American would require that you have a dual citizenship with both countries. There is nothing wrong with saying that you are descended from African ancestors. Another point is that not all native Africans are black, which invalidates the term “African-American” as a euphemism for black Americans.

Stand up and claim to be an American and be proud of that fact!

Good luck!

I am mexican american and I had also found only black boys to look so attractive and gorgeous indeed. However, my parents are the same too. They think the same about black people just because they stereotype so much from the ones my family and I see here around Compton, California. Marry ur black boy and don't worry if ur parents are not there they will reget it. Ur boy will prove to them that race and color does not matter the heart does.

Interracial relationships have become quite popular in this day and age. Be sure u can handle the pros and cons of this kind of relationship. Think long term and the effects it may have on all families involved. If it was meant to be it will happen, and some parents can hold grudges against their kids for long times, Make sure you do not hide anyone from your parents this will only harbor more hate towards him.

This is wrong and they should be ashamed because they are grown. But just hold on to your beliefs because sometimes our parents aren't perfect but they still love you and may be a little to judge mental. I have a "black" brother who is one of the best men out there and i wouldn't want him to be labeled like that so your parents should walk in someone Else's shoes for a while.

It is people like your parents that keep racism alive. It is sad.
I have a friend who went through the same thing. Her parents have never seen their grandkids because she married a black man. When they come home to visit friends (they moved out of state) her parents always leave town so they don't seem them. It truely is her parents loss, their kids are wonderful.
Good luck to you.

Um... Yeah
It sounds like one of your parents had a bad experience with a "black boy" and thats why they're saying this, there just looking out for there daughter, don't want to repeat history, I would talk to them about it to see what they say.

WHAT! That's crazy. That is racist. I would say ignore their ignorant judgments, and to go marry who you want. You can't make your parents choose who loves you, especially when they are only judging on the skin color of a person. They are lying to you, not all black guys are drug dealers, that’s racial stereotyping. It is WRONG.

One tip honey: Love comes in all colors.

Please ignore your parent’s ignorant advice; you know in your heart they are wrong for judging people for their color. You should marry who you want. If they don't want to come to your wedding then let them be childish and racist.

Yes it is wrong for them to say ALL, but some are, and you should not date them because that is a crapy way to live

but if you come home with some dude who has good grades and a good job, you parents will see that they were wrong, but dont spend you whole life trying to prove them wrong, go out with some one who treats you well
