It's sad yes but the dog is alive and well. A tragedy would be if the dog was dead. The dog will lead a normal and happy life. His depth perception will be off but he will adjust just fine. It's not that bad, don't over dramatize the situation. Better that the dog is alive and well than dead isn't it? Look at the positive. You still have your buddy. Cope.

We adopted a 9 week old beagle last year, and after being here only two days she broke through the baby gate and chased a cat under our bed. The cat took a swing at her and ended up imbedding its claw deep in her eye. We treated it for almost two months trying to save the eye, but eventually ended up needing to have it removed. During treatment, she was very quiet and subdued...the day we brought her home after the removal surgery, she was running and playing again like a normal puppy.
It's been over a year now since she lost her eye, and to be honest I don't think she remembers what it was like to have two. She's healthy and happy and gets around just as well as our other four dogs. Her losing the eye was much more traumatic for us than it was for her (she hated the treatment, not the removal) and since then she's been great. She even believes that the cat that scratched her is her friend, and follows him around the house with adoration. She never learned her lesson, and still chases all four of our cats. The only problem I've ever seen her have is that now and then she gets to running and tearing around the house while playing and isn't careful, and can give herself a good knock on the head going around corners. This doesn't seem to bother her at all, she just shakes her head and keeps going.
I think Gizmo will be fine, and you should try not to feel too bad for him. Dogs are so much better than us at dealing with these sorts of trauma....I've seen dogs have entire legs amputated and be happily walking/playing/acting normal within two weeks. Give Gizmo lots of love, treats, and more love and he'll recover before you know it!

My dear neighbor, first please let me say that I fully understand how you feel in going through your experience and now living with a pet who's suffered such a loss of their eye. I have fostered and raised many stray, injured and abandoned animals who by either injury or infection have lost one of their eyes and/or sight in both eyes rendering them blind. Your pet still has one good eye and will function almost normally, except now you'll see it swing its head from side to side more often to get a full view of what's in front of him and perhaps more frequently bumping into things that he doesn't see on the side of his missing eye. But don't distress! Be sure to pad his eye accordingly so as such knockings into corners of things, etc. don't cause any further injury until it's fully healed.
Afterward, just be sure that the incision and sutures your vet used are either absorbable or taken out when need be and that the hair around the scar line / wound line remains outward growing. Just keep the wound clean and bandaged properly, but not too tightly...once sutures are removed, be sure that there aren't any remaining hairs that are growin inward toward the wound or suture line as this can cause ingrown hairs under the skin and result in infection and irritation.
But never fear. The great thing about pets is that they bounce back a lot quicker than we do!! LOL Keep up your heart, give your pet lots of love and tender care, and he'll be bounding around your house and yard again in no time, like normal.
Good luck, God bless you both, and enjoy many wonderful years yet to come with your little guy!!!

I have a cat with one eye. When i found her she was just a little baby kitten smaller than my hand, laying almost dead in a field. both of here eyes were stuck shut. i nursed her back to health and eventually one of here eyes healed. she still likes to play alot. especially with the little 3 legged thing in the middle of some pizza boxes. she is cool.

My pug almost lost an eye. They saved it, but it is so scarred, he doesn't see well out of it. He has adjusted well. Dog's are awsome at coping with mishaps. Your dog will be fine. You are probably worse off than your dog.
